Why are wedding flowers so expensive?

How many times have you heard…

As soon as you mention wedding, they’ll add a few zero’s on the end!

Wedding supplier puts head in hands.

Let’s cut the crap; we don’t. (well some might but most don’t!)

I could talk about this for hours and hours about why that sentiment is utter nonsense but I’ll keep it brief; we have a life to fund and bills to pay.

What you see of a wedding florist is pretty Instagram feeds, professional photos of their work and sometimes a selfie surrounded by pretty flowers. But that’s only a small percentage of the work that is involved.

The price of the flowers themselves aside, what you don’t see is…:

  • Planning meetings, proposals, site visits, set up timelines, freelancers

  • Sourcing the flowers, liaising with suppliers, finding new suppliers, paying invoices, forward-ordering, last-minute ordering

  • Replying to DMs, emails, Whatsapps at midnight

  • Researching venues, themes, colour schemes, availability, choosing ribbon suppliers, choosing packaging and presentation

  • Marketing ourselves, thinking of what to caption the latest Instagram photo, creating website content, engaging on social media, keeping up with trends, attending courses to build our skill-base

  • Overheads whether that be a home workshop, rental of an off-site workspace, bills, phone bills

  • Van hire, car payments, insurances, fuel

  • Invoicing, software to manage invoicing, tax returns, chasing outstanding payments.

  • Sleepless nights, 4am alarms, set up and takedowns surviving on just a rich tea biscuit.

You get the drift.

It’s not all glamour and pretty pictures. There is so so so SO much graft that goes on behind the scenes. You’re paying for a service, our knowledge and our skillset. You’re paying for us to be a pivotal part in the smooth-running of one of the biggest, most memorable days of your life. Choose wisely.
